The second
of the two fundamental cytological and genetic events
in the sexual cycle, the first being mitosis.
Nuclear divisions in which the diploid or
somatic chromosome number
is reduced by half. The mechanism by which the chromosome
number is reduced from 2n to n and in which segregation
and independent assortment of genes occur.
