Region 11 Summer Meeting
Prairie Promenade
The Flint Hills Daylily Society invites you to join us as we host,
Region 11 Summer Meeting 2009, Prairie Promenade, in Manhattan, Kansas, July 3-5
The Flint Hills Daylily Society of Manhattan, Kansas wishes to invite you to the 2009 Summer Meeting, "Prairie Promenade". This is the first Regional Meeting that the Flint Hills club is hosting in our many years of existence.
We will have John Shooter as our guest speaker from Marietta Gardens, Marietta, North Carolina. They have wonderful introductions and are great people as well. Many in our region grow their cultivars and they do well.
We will have seven of our area gardens on tour. Three of them are AHS Display Gardens, Steve and Maureen Thien's "Mateo Tipi Gardens", Irene and Rick Johnson's "Prairie Wind Gardens", Jane and Steve Amy's "The Amy Garden" as well as four other wonderful gardens of Ann Redmon, Mardi Finn, Pat Freeman, and Bernadette and Joe Schmidt.
We will have a great live auction (including several Shooter introductions), bag raffles and silent auction as well. We expect to have some surprises for all and a fun weekend!
Plan to attend and celebrate with us. More details and registration information will be appearing soon.
Regional Chairperson - Steve Amy
We have seven wonderful gardens lined up for your enjoyment
Manhattan:
Steve and Maureen Thien – Mateo Tipi Gardens
The garden's name, Mateo Tipi, is derived from an Indian legend and means "home of the bear." In this 5b plant hardiness zone, the daylilies, just like bears, hibernate over winter.
Steve and Maureen Thien (pronounced 'teen') garden on a large city lot located on a quiet cul-de-sac bordering onto a wooded boundary. Numerous island and periphery plots host 600+ daylilies, a few vegetables and some accent plants. An inviting Amish swing, tempting benches, and comfortable patio greet visitors to this American Hemerocallis Society Display Garden.
Pat and Fred Freeman
Fred and Pat Freeman's ranch style home sits on a large hilly lot. All sides of the house have daylilies with the majority on the west or lower part of the yard. The three hundred daylilies are conveniently located at the front of the beds, with many areas having contrasting color schemes such as red/yellow or peach/wine.
Behind the daylilies is a colorful array of bird and butterfly plants. The eco-friendly yard hosts many creatures, welcome and unwelcome.
Their loss of many trees in last year's tornado set off a flurry of renewal and rearranging. All will be put back together by daylily show time.
Ann and Dave Redmon
Ann and Dave Redmon have lived and gardened on this corner lot since 2000 when they moved 200 daylilies from a previous home in Manhattan. Over 900 named daylily varieties plus seedlings from Ann's beginning hybridizing efforts now grow in curved beds and borders on the 2/3 acre lot.
The Redmon garden has a large selection of spider and unusual form daylilies as well as a good variety of Leo Sharp's Brookwood series. Many of the daylilies, some by less well known regional hybridizers, have been acquired while attending both Nationals and Regionals in various parts of the country.
The Schmeidler/Diaz Garden
Located in one of the older neighborhoods of Manhattan, the Frank Schmeidler and Ralph Diaz garden has been through a continuous evolution of growing conditions and plant material since they began it 12 years ago.
At that point, the yard included a huge patch of prickly pear cactus, 4 yucca plants and several overgrown yews. Due to the many large trees surrounding their home, the focus originally was to create a shade garden.
Frank began his love of daylilies about nine years ago when a friend invited him to go on a buying trip to the Langley Gardens in Topeka, KS. He was awestruck at the beautiful landscaping and more so at the many varieties of daylilies. So many beautiful choices, so little time! At that point, the Schmeidler/Diaz garden boasted a total of ten daylily plants, though just as the garden area has expanded, so has the number of daylilies -- nine years later, there are a few less than 500.
Olsburg and Wamego
Irene and Rick Johnson - Prairiewind Gardens - Olsburg
Rick and Irene Johnson have a 340 acre farm/ranch where they have a cow/calf operation and grow alfalfa, brome, soybeans, corn, and yes, flowers. One day at the mall Irene saw a club display of daylily blooms and life around the farm hasn’t been the same since.
Their yard became an AHS Display Garden in 2002 with over 1,000 varieties of daylilies. Rick, Irene and their friend Tom Hulbert love to garden and are usually found outside working in the gardens. As you walk around the 3 acres of garden you will notice the many beds lined with rocks and paths paved with them. Three ponds are also rocked with native limestone.
Bernadette and Joe Schmidt – Wamego
The Schmidt garden was a cow pasture and now it’s not. It’s now a garden because we love to work the soil, and see things grow. After landscaping the acre, where our house is located, all eyes were turned to our second acre, still in native grass. Random flower beds, trees and shrubs gradually began to appear, because we couldn’t resist the temptation to continue planting. It soon became apparent that we were greatly in need of a plan. As a result, we designed new beds with the help of our local garden center. We had to dig and transplant over 300 daylilies and numerous other flowers and shrubs into the new design.
In addition to the glorious daylilies, our garden includes a vegetable garden and an orchard with apple, peach, pear, and apricot trees. You’ll also find blueberry bushes and grape vines. We are hosting the Oscie Whatley Memorial seedling bed. So, be sure to look for it.
Jane and Steve Amy – The Amy Garden – Wamego
The whole Amy yard is filled with flowers and the favorite is the daylily.
The yard was on tour in 2003 and has changed considerably since then. The ice storm in 2008 took many branches (six trailer loads) and so hosta had to be moved and the daylilies in the main back yard are in more sun. We took down the older crab trees in the front. All of these losses have meant more sun and more plants. We have probably traded out at least half the plants or more that were here in 2003 and replaced them with newer plants while retaining some favorites that we can’t let go.
A couple more wind sculptures by Lyman Whitaker have been added on the South Lot. The yard is still a mix of over 600 daylilies, oriental, orienpet and asian lilies, around 150 cultivars of hosta, salvias, and penstemons to name a few. There are still two small water gardens, a short stream bed and one bubbling rock. Come spend the 4th of July in Manhattan KS for your best Fourth of July ever.
